Volunteering in our local community: The Ashdown Forest story

Baldwin Boxall’s Head Quarters is situated on the outskirts of the Ashdown Forest, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and as such, it only felt fitting that some members of the team contributed to the maintenance of such an important and wonderful piece of nature.

A new initiative in recent years, volunteering days at Baldwin Boxall can be used by staff to volunteer for a charity of their choice, or join a larger team effort, such as the bracken pulling on the Ashdown Forest that the team took part in in July.

The first of hopefully many volunteering days on the Forest, home to the fictional lives of the characters in A.A Milne’s Winnie the Pooh, the team met with Ashdown Forest ranger Mike to kick start the day.

Following a thorough safety briefing, the team was let loose on the Forest and the bracken pulling commenced in earnest! The sun beat down on us as we made our way across the heathland, removing the bracken to encourage growth of the other grasses, more pertinent to the wildlife and their habitats.

Great progress was made by the team and after a bite to eat in the shade whilst sharing stories and plans for the warm weekend ahead, the final stretch lay ahead that afternoon. Over 30 bulk garden waste bags brimming with bracken were cleared by the team in the six-hour stint.
